CMI Level 6 – Studies in Management and Leadership QCF.
Who are these qualifications for?
The Level 6 qualifications in Management and Leadership are designed to develop personal management capabilities, make effective use of information in decision-making, operations and the development of the skills in managing people.
What are the entry requirements?
CMI does not specify entry requirements for these qualifications, but Centres are required to ensure that learners admitted to the programme have sufficient capability at the right level to undertake the learning and assessment.
Flexible qualification structure
The Level 6 qualifications in Management and Leadership offer a highly flexible approach to learning. They allow the freedom and choice to select from the broad range of units available (see Centre Assessment Guidance for more details) allowing employers and individuals to tailor the size and elements of the qualifications to suit their specific needs.
The qualifications follow the new Award, Certificate, Diploma format where:
Award is a concise qualification aimed at developing basis skills and knowledge at this level
Certificate builds and broadens on the areas covered in the Award; and
Diploma develops a comprehensive range of skills and knowledge required at this level.
To achieve a CMI Level 6 Award in Management and Leadership, you need to successfully complete at least one unit to a minimum of 7 credits.
To achieve a CMI Level 6 Certificate in Management and Leadership you need to successfully complete any combination of units to a minimum of 14 credits.
To achieve a CMI Level 6 Diploma in Management and Leadership, you need to complete all core units (Group A) and three optional units (Group B) to a total of at least 41 credits.
How long will it take?
The time it takes to complete a qualification is dependent on the units you choose and delivery times and methods however, as a guide:
The Award can take as little as 4-6 weeks
The Certificate can take between 2-3 months
The Diploma can take between 6 to 12 months
How are these qualifications assessed?
Assessment is normally via practical work-based assignments this ensures you minimise time away from work and that you undertake work study which is relevant to your own organisation’s context with positive and tangible skills and knowledge improvement which can be quickly transferred to your workplace situation.

On successful completion of the required units for a Level 6 Diploma qualification in Management and Leadership, you will have completed at least one Level 7 unit and therefore are immediately eligible to also recieve the Level 7 Award in Strategic Management & Leadership.
On successful completion of a Level 6 qualification in Management and Leadership, a number of progression opportunities become available:
Enhance your professional status by upgrading your CMI membership
Progress to other qualifications at the same level (e.g. from Level 6 Award to Level 6 Certificate etc)
Progress to other qualifications at the next level (e.g. from Level 7 Award to Level 7 Certificate or Diploma

Managing organisational culture (Unit code 6001V1 – Credit value 7)
You will learn about organisational culture and how it can impact upon organisational behaviour. Understand the relationship between culture, strategy and performance and the skills of cultural development.
Ethical organisational management (Unit code 6002V1 – Credit value 7)
You will learn about the principles of organisational ethics, ethical codes and legislation also about integrated approaches to business ethics and corporate social responsibility.
Managing the change process (Unit code 6003V1 – Credit value 7)
You will learn about the forces for change in organisations and the impact of the change process and its management.
Leading equality & diversity (Unit code 6004V1 – Credit value 7)
You will learn about commitment to and application of equality of opportunity and diversity and the needs of others in relation to equality of opportunity and diversity.
Managerial networks (Unit code 6005V1 – Credit value 7)
You will learn about the development of personal networks to support organisational objectives. Understand how collection of data/information from the networks can inform on the environment within which the organisation operates. Also about the skills of encouraging/supporting implementation of ideas from networks across the organisation.
Management systems and structure (Unit code 6006V1 – Credit value 7)
You will learn about the meaning and nature of organisational structure and understand the advantages and disadvantages of centralisation and decentralisation.
Managing ideas and innovation (Unit code 6007V1 – Credit value 7)
You will learn about the identification and encouragement of ideas and innovation across organisations and their evaluation.
Managerial decision making (Unit code 6008V1 – Credit value 7)
You will learn about the communication of the organisation’s purpose, values and vision. About how to support and advise individuals during periods of setback and change, and also about the skills required to make difficult decisions.
Personal development as a strategic manager (Unit code 7001V1 – Credit value 6)
You will learn how to identify and achieve strategic ambitions by constructing, reviewing and evaluating a personal development plan to become a strategic leader and to take into account Health & Safety responsibilities on an individual and corporate level.
Being a strategic leader (Unit code 7013V1 – Credit value 7)
You will learn about ethical and value-based approaches to leadership, different styles of strategic leadership and how to gain organisational buy-in through strategic leadership.

I have been in my new role since July now. My team has responded well to my situational managerial approach. I have found a renewed enthusiasm for people management. I enjoy seeing my team achieve success as individuals and a team. They are voicing ideas for change, positive about developing, keen to take on new challenges. They and I still have a way to go, however I am creating a future for them. I believe the fact that I have had the opportunity to learn and research strategic management and leadership I have been able to apply the theories in a practical way.
